From Zero to Feathered Friends
When we first decided to raise chickens, we had no idea what we were getting into. But a year later, we can confidently say it’s been one of our most rewarding projects. Here’s everything we learned in Year One.
Building the Coop
Our first major project was constructing the chicken coop. We spent weeks researching designs, gathering materials, and finally getting our hands dirty. The learning curve was steep, but the satisfaction of building a home for our future feathered friends was incredible.
Key lessons:
- Predator-proofing is non-negotiable
- Good ventilation prevents disease
- Space per chicken matters more than you’d think
- Hardware cloth is your friend (not chicken wire!)
The Birds Arrive
Bringing home our first batch of baby chicks in March was like bringing home newborns. We were nervous, overly cautious, and perhaps a bit obsessed with monitoring their every move. By summer, they were full-grown birds, and we had our first eggs!
Challenges We Faced
Not every day was perfect. We dealt with:
- Heat stress during summer
- An unexpected predator incident (thankfully all birds survived)
- Learning to butcher our first rooster (emotionally complex!)
- Seasonal egg production variations
The Rewards
Nothing compares to collecting fresh eggs from birds you’ve cared for. The yolks are rich orange, the shells are strong, and knowing exactly how your food was raised is priceless.
Looking Ahead to Year Two
With Year One under our belt, Year Two is going to be even better. We’re planning to expand the flock, improve our coop infrastructure, and maybe even try hatching our own eggs.
If you’re thinking about raising chickens, I’d say go for it. The experience has been humbling, educational, and surprisingly therapeutic.
